Water Transfer

A Simple Kitchen Experiment

While we reached this stage within an hour or so, the complete transfer took a few days along with some evaporation !

Leaf Sink or Float

A LEAFY EXPERIMENT

The final and the most fun activity we did with our leaves after the leaf comparison and leaf rubbing was ........... Leaf Sink or Float.

I got the idea from Wonder Years. Her activity tray is so neatly set up, with true Montessori flavor :)

Step 1

First I asked Lil Maullimah,"What do you think will happen if you put a leaf in water ? Will it sink or float ?"

Lil Muallimah: "aaaaa.....sink"

Lil Muallimah: "huuuuuuhhhhh ! It didn't it, let me try another one.."

To my surprise and much delight.... she kept saying teh same thing and kept trying out every single leaf on the table :):):)

Step 2

"Will a coin sink or float"

Result: "Sink"

Step 3

Now try how many coins will it take to sink the leaf ?

Look closely... it sunk !

Let's try another one

And  another one.

Lil Mualliamh was totally absorbed in her leaves for a long time. Her comments, coin count and discovery was a pleasure to watch. Alhumdolillah

Next time, whenever we redo this activity, I think we should do a bar graph for  the number of coins too.

I've linked this activity up on Living Montessori Now's

Inertia Experiment # 2

FLICK THE COIN

Try this simple experiment, by taping a 1" strip of regular paper and placing it over a glass. Balance a coin on top. Move your hand swiftly to strike the paper and the coin should fall in the glass. I found this in a book I got form the library.

The kids got it sometimes and didn't many times. They finally learnt that they could do it only a particular way. Can you find what??? I would love to hear your comments or answer any questions you may have.. Do try it yourself.

Inertia Experiment # 1

FIRST LAW OF MOTION ...INERTIA

Kids and I enjoy watching Steve Spangler experiments a lot. The videos are engaging and I especially like how there is an explanation along with the video too on the Science of it :)  As Lil Maullim # 1 is studying the Laws of Motion. So we did a series of experiments in Inertia here's the most awesome one.....

All my Muallims and I tried it out......and an important lesson was learnt......not to hold the edges but more from the middle.

So after a few tries here are the results one by one....

Then........ I gave them a challenge.... they were all like "Mama what are you doing ?" "Are you sure ?" "What if it falls ?" "There will be a big mess!"

My response:  "You won't know till you try" "I want you to learn an important lesson in life here" "Never fear to try!"

So with a big nervous smile..........

Lil Muallim # 1 .......

Lil Muallim # 2.....

......aawwww nervously slow movement :)

.....If at first you don't succeed try again....

......My challenge........which my Muallims refused to try..... and kep saying "Mama what are you doing ?"

......as I was the one doing this the kids in their awe missed taking a picture of it being done! They were just too shocked :) :):):):)

...and then I did this.........with even more screams and squeals from the kids.......

......taaaa daaaaaaaaaaa

......Read about this experiment, and explanation here.
